One way to tell the difference between genuine leather and PU leather is to do a water test — which means putting a few drops of water on the material. Genuine leather will absorb water, while PU leather will not.

You can also tell them apart by looking at the fabric and examining it closely. Genuine leather will show some imperfections and have a real grain, while PU leather will have an almost perfectly patterned appearance.

PU leather is becoming increasingly popular, especially as awareness of sustainability and animal ethics grows. It’s often used as upholstery — both residential and commercial — including sofas, headboards, ottomans, and cars. It’s also used as a fashionable alternative to leather in handbags, clothing, and shoes.

The PU versions tout the word “leather” — as do faux and vegan leathers — but Weller says the name is mostly for marketing purposes.

“These are usually 100% plastic, and some vegan leathers… tend to be perceived as higher quality and more expensive, so companies can market and sell them at a higher price,” Weller explains. “Similarly, in car interiors, [some] ‘leather’ seats are really just plastic, but they sound better and then they can charge more for the ‘leather seats.’”
